Art + Politics = Public Art

10/10/2012

Public art needs public funds...and private. That is why Littleton Arts Uptown does politics.

Any questions?  Ok...this guy has one......

Artwork Re-interpreted by a Broken Camera-Phone.

Artist: Jeffrey Littleton    2012    Oil on canvas

And once completed and photographed with a normal camera it looks like this.....

This is an oil painting I am about half-way finished. It resembles an acid trip because my phone has decided to only take photos in the negative. Pretty cool but I think I would develop a severe case of anxiety if it was on my wall like this.

Open Studio Days

I'll be opening up the new studio as part of the Open House Chicago.

Read more about it at this link:

This is the exterior...on a pleasantly foggy day. You can see my window, 3rd floor, 2nd from the left...a yellow bird flew in the other day, it flew around a bit, crapped on the window sill and flew away. Pretty bird though.

This is the main auditorium, there is also a theater upstairs (National Pastime) and they are opening a new show soon, a musical about Pres. Andrew Jackson...why not?
To get to my studio you have to cut across the upper balcony...easy.

This is me sketching a belly dancer on the stage above....again...why not?

See ya there!

Sign Painting in Chinatown

Some pigments are more fugitive the others...in this case red. This sign has been swinging gently in the heart of Chinatown on the 200 block of W. Cermak since 1969. It looks like a wee bit of pruning is called for as well.

The Aster Playlot Mural in Uptown

Artist: Jeffrey Littleton 2012

This is about half of the mural painted in the behind the Aster play-lot in Uptown. The owner of the adjacent apartment building has been rolling over graffiti for about 20 years now so he took it upon himself to hire an artist to improve it once and for all. We hope. It is great Uptown has people like the property owner who is funding this on his own initiative and giving a local artist (me) something to do.
Typically in Chicago the taggers and other graffiti practitioners avoid defacing art, it still happens but not much, either way if your going to paint outside in the public way it is good to accept that risk with a zen-like attitude of the impermanence of all things.. I hope people enjoy it before that happens if it does, the kids seem to like it so I'm happy.

More pictures to come...its hard to photograph because its wider ("30') then the space to back up enough for a full shot.

I am starting a new mural next week in a more auspicious location in Uptown.

* Below is an "in process photo", updated photo coming soon.

Stay tuned and don't touch that dial.....Uptown is back!

Montrose Harbor Sparrow

Artist: Jeffrey Littleton 2012

In the winter the birds of Uptown Chicago almost have the entire lakefront to themselves. Unluckily for the humble Sparrow that would include the Peregrine  Falcon and a big Arctic Snow Owl with a hearty appetite, this year wintering in the Windy City.

The Sparrows know, stay in the trees.......

January Skyline from Uptown

Artist: Jeffrey Littleton 2012

The Chicago skyline in January monotone mode.

We need that occasional colorful sunset, a vivid imagination, and a sense of humor to make it to Spring.

Littleton Arts Over Uptown

I took these photos from a Cessna at about a 1000' from over west Lakeview. The plane is owned and operated by talented aerial photographer and pilot Allan Goldstein who invited me along.

You can see in the top photo  Sheridan Park section between the cemeteries of Graceland and St. Boniface, my home neighborhood. It was a bumpy ride up the last week, gusty 30+ mph gusts. I still got off a few shots with the Blackberry!

Also you can see the Loop/downtown, Wrigley Field, and St. Alphonsus in Lakeview, a suburban golf course........Whadda view!

Uptown the Morning After......

Artist: Jeffrey Littleton    2011

This is a quick sketch from a photo I saw in the Uptownupdate blog. It would make a nice painting I thinks........

I made a coupla change like changing the "WIGS" on the sign to "UPTOWN" and moving Uptown Bikes over a bit.

On the same block we had a Hollywood-style barricade situation, as you can clearly see all is well and good again!
